Module 3: Technical Product Introduction
A digital output can command a field device correctly while the external circuit itself has already developed an open, shorted, or missing-load condition. The TRICONEX 3626X addresses that problem within the Tricon CX architecture as a 32-point TMR digital output module with programmable point supervision. Schneider Electric’s Tricon CX documentation specifies 32 commoned output signals, 24 VDC nominal operation, and installation only in Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis. Each module is designed to work with 16-point commoned field termination panels, so one 32-point module uses two termination-panel positions or equivalent field-termination hardware.
The output section is designed for comparatively high-current 24 VDC loads. Published Tricon CX specifications give a recommended field-voltage range of 20.4–28.8 VDC, with 1.70 A ±10% maximum per point, 5 A surge for 7 ms, and 20 A maximum total module output current. Output switches are self-protected against over-voltage, over-temperature, over-current, and inductive kickback, eliminating the need for a field fuse at each output in the specified termination arrangement. Schneider’s documentation also specifies field-to-system isolation of 400 Vrms continuous / 566 V peak or 1,500 VDC for 60 seconds, plus programmable supervision and short/open-circuit detection.
Module 4: Application Scenarios & Field Realities
- Inside a Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis, 3626X provides 32 commoned 24 VDC outputs for final elements and other discrete actuators. The key system constraint is architectural: Schneider specifies this module for Tricon CX expansion chassis only, so it should not be treated as a generic replacement for earlier Tricon 36xx modules.
- Where field-circuit supervision is required, individual points can be programmed for supervision, including short- and open-circuit detection. That makes the module suitable for monitored actuator circuits where loss of continuity must be reported rather than discovered only during a functional demand.
- When several high-current solenoids operate simultaneously, the 1.70 A per-point figure is not the only design limit. Schneider specifies 20 A maximum for the complete module, while the compatible 16-point termination panel is limited to 10 A. In practice, two termination panels are required for a 32-point module, and the load distribution between them must be checked.
- During a brownfield migration using third-party field interfaces, verify the termination hardware as carefully as the output card. Current Tricon CX termination documentation lists dedicated 3626X assemblies and cable sets; third-party interface options also exist, but their safety rating, channel count, and wiring arrangement must match the approved installation.

Replacement Matrix
Exact 3626X with matching Tricon CX configuration: Drop-in Replacement
When the existing system uses 3626X with the approved Tricon CX expansion chassis, compatible firmware, matching termination hardware, and identical field wiring, the module can generally be exchanged as a like-for-like replacement.
3626X hardware/firmware revision change: Software Compatible / Configuration Verification Required
Confirm the module revision, controller version, configured supervision status, output assignments, and diagnostic settings before releasing the replacement.
3624 substituted for 3626X: Hardware Modification Required
Although both are 24 VDC supervised digital-output devices, their system architectures differ. Model 3624 belongs to earlier Tricon-family hardware, whereas 3626X is explicitly a Tricon CX module installed only in Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis.
3604E or 3625 substituted for 3626X: Hardware Modification Required
Those modules belong to different Tricon architectures and have different output topology, termination requirements, and system compatibility. The 3626X should be matched to the Tricon CX platform rather than selected solely by its 24 VDC output rating.
⚠️ Field Traps (Watch Out)
Tricon CX chassis trap: Schneider states that 3626X modules can be installed only in Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis. A module that appears electrically similar to an older Tricon output card is not automatically compatible with an earlier chassis.
Termination-current trap: The 3626X can support up to 20 A across the complete module, but the compatible 16-point termination panel is rated at 10 A. A 32-point implementation therefore requires two termination panels, and each panel’s aggregate current must remain within its own limit.
Supervision-configuration trap: Point supervision is programmable. A replacement module may power up normally while still being incorrectly configured for the field application’s supervised/non-supervised requirements. Verify each affected point in the approved TriStation project before returning the system to service.
Commoned-output trap: The 32 outputs are commoned. Do not assume each point has an independently isolated return. Review the termination-panel schematic and field power arrangement before migration.

Pre-Shipment QA Protocol for TRICONEX 3626X
- Step 1 — Identity Verification: Confirm TRICONEX marking, 3626X model number, serial information, hardware revision, manufacturing data, and associated Tricon CX termination references.
- Step 2 — OEM Anti-Counterfeit Visual Inspection: Inspect labels, barcode information, PCB markings where accessible, connector geometry, keying features, front-panel LEDs, retaining hardware, and evidence of unauthorized rework.
- Step 3 — Mechanical Inspection: Check the module housing, backplane connector, field interface, mounting hardware, alignment/keying features, and enclosure for cracks, deformation, corrosion, contamination, or damaged contacts.
- Step 4 — Test Fixture Verification: Prepare a controlled 24 VDC output test fixture and verify that the load bank can safely exercise representative channels without exceeding the 1.70 A point rating or the approved aggregate test limit.
- Step 5 — Power-On Self-Test: Install the module in an approved Tricon CX expansion chassis and verify normal startup, module recognition, PASS/FAULT/ACTIVE/LOAD indications, and absence of diagnostic errors.
- Step 6 — 32-Channel Output Test: Exercise all 32 outputs individually and record commanded state, output voltage, load current, LED indication, and diagnostic status.
- Step 7 — Load and Surge Verification: Test representative channels under controlled resistive and inductive-equivalent loads while remaining within the documented current and surge limits.
- Step 8 — Supervision Test: On configured supervised points, simulate approved open-circuit, short-circuit, and missing-load conditions and verify the expected diagnostic response.
- Step 9 — TMR and Stability Test: Verify the redundant output-processing paths in the approved Tricon CX test arrangement and operate representative channels continuously to identify intermittent switching, abnormal heating, or diagnostic faults.
- Step 10 — Final QC Record: Record model, serial number, hardware/firmware revision, all 32 channel results, measured output voltage, load current, supervision results, TMR diagnostic status, visual condition, test date, and final QC disposition.
Technical Verification Note: Schneider Electric’s Tricon CX documentation identifies 3626X as a 32-point commoned TMR digital-output module designed for Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis. Its published specifications include 20.4–28.8 VDC recommended operation, 24 VDC nominal voltage, 1.70 A ±10% per point, 5 A surge for 7 ms, 20 A maximum module current, <4.0 mA maximum output leakage, programmable point supervision, short/open-circuit detection, and self-protection against over-voltage, over-temperature, over-current, and inductive kickback. Compatible field termination includes 9662X-610RF and 9671X-610RF, with two 16-point termination panels required for the full 32-point module.
