Module 3: Technical Product Introduction

A differential analog input card becomes especially valuable when field signals share long cable runs, different grounding conditions, or measurable common-mode interference. Triconex 3721C is the current-revision designation associated with Model 3721, a 32-point differential, DC-coupled TMR analog input module for Tricon systems. The documented input ranges are 0–5 VDC or −5 to +5 VDC, and each of the three redundant channels independently measures the field signal before the values are transferred to the main processors for TMR evaluation.

The measurement specification is tightly defined: 10 ms input update rate, 12-bit or 14-bit programmable resolution, and accuracy better than 0.15% of full-scale range from 0°C to 60°C. Input resistance is at least 10 MΩ DC, common-mode rejection is typically −85 dB from DC to 100 Hz, and the common-mode voltage range is −12 V to +12 V peak. The module also supports 0–20 mA input through a 250 Ω shunt, provides 150 VDC continuous / 115 VAC continuous overrange protection, and maintains at least 800 VDC field-to-system isolation.

Module 4: Application Scenarios & Field Realities

  • For pressure, flow, and level transmitters that deliver voltage signals, the 3721C provides differential measurement across 32 points. That is useful where the signal reference cannot be assumed to be identical at the transmitter and cabinet ends.
  • In cabinets with long analog cable runs, the approximately −85 dB common-mode rejection can help suppress interference that appears equally on both conductors. The actual result still depends heavily on cable routing, shielding, grounding, and termination practice.
  • When a current transmitter must be integrated through a voltage-input architecture, the documented 250 Ω shunt arrangement permits 0–20 mA signals to be represented as a voltage for acquisition. The shunt resistance becomes part of the measurement chain, so its tolerance should be included in calibration work.
  • During a legacy Tricon upgrade, the 3721C designation appears in later product documentation as the revision-controlled counterpart to Model 3721. Tricon documentation lists 3721C as a 32-point differential DC-coupled TMR analog input module corresponding to Model 3721.

Module 5: Migration, Compatibility & Installation Traps

Replacement Matrix

Replacement Status Engineering Assessment
Drop-in Replacement Yes, for a like-for-like 3721C installation in a compatible Tricon chassis using the approved baseplate, termination hardware, and field-signal configuration.
Software Compatible Generally yes for an exact hardware replacement, but channel assignments, selected input range, scaling, diagnostics, and the approved TriStation configuration must be verified.
Hardware Modification Required Normally no for an exact 3721C replacement. Changes may be required when moving from another analog-input architecture, changing termination hardware, or migrating between chassis generations.

⚠️ Field Traps: Watch Out

Do not confuse 3721C with 3720C. Tricon documentation identifies 3721C as 32 differential, DC-coupled points, while 3720C is a 64-point single-ended analog input module. The two modules have materially different field-wiring requirements.

Confirm the actual voltage range configured in TriStation. Model 3721 supports either 0–5 VDC or −5 to +5 VDC, with the selected range configured through the control-system software. A transmitter producing a bipolar signal should not be connected to a channel configured for the unipolar range.

Check common-mode voltage before energizing the channel. The documented common-mode range is −12 V to +12 V peak. A differential signal can be numerically correct while the common-mode component is outside the permissible range.

Do not assume every 3721C listing has identical electrical data. Several current secondary pages publish different logic-power, temperature, weight, and input specifications. The controlled Tricon documentation identifies the core 3721 architecture and should take precedence when preparing a procurement or replacement record.

Watch rapidly changing process signals during channel comparison. The documented diagnostic logic can defer comparison when an input sample changes by more than 0.25% from the previous sample. Rapid process transitions can therefore alter the time needed to identify a channel discrepancy.

Module 6: Quality Assurance SOP

A surplus 3721C should be tested as a 32-channel differential TMR analog acquisition module. Bench testing should use calibrated differential sources rather than simple single-ended voltage injection.

  • OEM anti-counterfeit visual inspection: Verify Triconex/Invensys identification, exact 3721C designation, yellow identification color, PCB revision, connector geometry, front-panel labels, and manufacturing identifiers against controlled references.
  • Part-number and traceability check: Record the complete model, revision, serial number, date code, and associated baseplate/termination information.
  • Mechanical inspection: Examine the backplane connector, enclosure, keying mechanism, PCB, field interface, and mounting hardware for bent contacts, corrosion, contamination, cracking, or unauthorized rework.
  • Power-on self-test (POST): Install the module in an approved Tricon test arrangement and verify expected PASS, FAULT, ACTIVE, and FIELD status indications.
  • Supply verification: Apply the approved system supply using a controlled fixture and monitor module power consumption and startup behavior.
  • 32-channel differential test: Exercise all 32 input channels independently using calibrated differential voltage sources.
  • Unipolar-range test: Verify representative signals across the 0–5 VDC range, including low-scale, mid-scale, and high-scale points.
  • Bipolar-range test: Where the hardware and configuration support the bipolar mode, verify representative values across −5 to +5 VDC.
  • Resolution verification: Test representative channels in both 12-bit and 14-bit programmable-resolution configurations where supported by the authorized system test environment.
  • Accuracy verification: Compare calibrated readings against the documented <0.15% FSR accuracy requirement over the specified 0°C to 60°C range.
  • Input-resistance test: Verify representative channels against the minimum 10 MΩ DC input resistance specification.
  • Common-mode rejection test: Apply controlled common-mode disturbances within the approved range and verify behavior consistent with the documented approximately −85 dB rejection from DC to 100 Hz.
  • Common-mode voltage test: Confirm representative operation while keeping the applied common-mode voltage within the documented −12 V to +12 V peak range.
  • Current-input verification: Where the application uses the optional shunt arrangement, inject calibrated 0–20 mA signals through the specified 250 Ω shunt and verify correct conversion to the configured voltage representation.
  • Overrange verification: Where the test fixture permits, exercise the documented input overrange measurement to approximately −5.3 to +5.3 VDC without exceeding the approved test limits.
  • Isolation verification: Test field-to-system isolation using the approved laboratory procedure, referencing the documented 800 VDC minimum field-to-system isolation.
  • TMR comparison test: Apply matched signals to the three redundant measurement paths and confirm consistent readings, discrepancy detection, and controlled single-channel fault identification.
  • Diagnostic timing test: Use controlled signal transitions to verify the configured diagnostic behavior while accounting for the documented comparison rules governing rapidly changing inputs.
  • System recognition test: Verify correct module identification, channel addressing, diagnostics, and data transfer through the Tricon I/O architecture.
  • Communication handshake verification: Confirm successful transfer of all 32 analog values from the 3721C to the Tricon processors. The module itself is an analog I/O device, not a standalone Ethernet or Modbus interface.
  • Scaling and configuration verification: Compare every tested channel against the approved TriStation range, engineering scaling, tag assignment, and configured input mode.
  • Extended-run test: Operate representative channels continuously while monitoring measurement stability, diagnostic events, supply behavior, and abnormal temperature rise.
  • Final QC record: Document hardware revision, supply measurements, all 32 channel results, selected voltage ranges, resolution mode, accuracy checks, common-mode testing, current/shunt configuration where applicable, isolation results, TMR diagnostics, system recognition, extended-run observations, traceability, and packaging condition.

Technical Identification Note: Tricon documentation identifies 3721C as the revision-controlled designation corresponding to Model 3721, described as a 32-point differential, DC-coupled TMR analog input module. The controlled specification lists 0–5 VDC or −5 to +5 VDC input, 10 ms update rate, 12-bit or 14-bit programmable resolution, <0.15% FSR accuracy from 0°C to 60°C, 10 MΩ minimum input resistance, approximately −85 dB common-mode rejection, 0–20 mA capability through a 250 Ω shunt, and 800 VDC minimum field-to-system isolation.
