Module 3: Technical Product Introduction
A process transmitter may be delivering a valid 4–20 mA signal while the control system still lacks the device-level diagnostic information needed for maintenance. The TRICONEX 3723X addresses that requirement as a 32-channel TMR analog input module with HART pass-through. The module accepts field signals over a 0–5 VDC measurement range and can communicate HART data from connected HART-enabled field instruments. Tricon CX documentation states that the 3723X can be installed only in a Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis.
The conversion stage provides 16-bit resolution, a 50 ms input update rate consisting of a 47.5 ms input filter and 2.5 ms update interval, and accuracy below 1% of full-scale range from −20 to +60°C. Input over-range measurement extends to 5.75 VDC, while the module supports 0–23 mA measurement through an external 250 Ω I/V resistor arrangement. Each of the 32 channels has its own HART v7-compatible modem, and the documented HART pass-through identity is “Triconex AI 3723/X” with device type code 0x9A7F.
Module 4: Application Scenarios & Field Realities
- At refinery pressure, flow, and level transmitter loops, the 3723X can acquire the analog process value while also passing HART communication through to the connected instrument. That gives maintenance personnel access to device-level information without adding a separate HART interface for every loop.
- When a transmitter reports an abnormal process value, check both the analog reading and HART diagnostic path. A healthy 4–20 mA loop does not necessarily prove that the instrument’s internal diagnostics, sensor status, or configuration are healthy.
- For dense Tricon CX analog cabinets, the 32-channel architecture places a large number of transmitter inputs on one TMR module. The associated termination hardware must be selected correctly; Tricon CX documentation lists multiple compatible 16-point and 32-point termination options for the 3723X.
- During hazardous-area interface work, the termination system becomes part of the engineering design. Pepperl+Fuchs documents dedicated termination boards for 3723X installations, including versions with hazardous-area spring terminals and 24 VDC redundant supply inputs. The board and isolator combination must be certified and configured for the actual field-device installation.

Module 5: Migration, Compatibility & Installation Traps
Replacement Matrix
| Replacement Type | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Drop-in Replacement | Yes, for an exact 3723X replacement in a compatible Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis |
| Software Compatible | Conditional — verify Tricon CX software revision, HART configuration, channel assignments, scaling, and termination definitions |
| Hardware Modification Required | Normally no for an exact replacement; compatible termination panel, cabling, field power, and HART architecture must match |
⚠️ Field Traps — Watch Out
1. Do not substitute 3722X when HART pass-through is required.
Both 3722X and 3723X are documented as 32-point, 0–5 VDC TMR analog input modules, but the 3723X specifically adds HART communication with one modem per point. Replacing a 3723X with a 3722X can remove the HART function even if the analog process values continue to read correctly.
2. The module does not directly present a native 4–20 mA input at its electronics terminals.
The documented input architecture uses a 0–5 VDC measurement range, while current-loop applications use an appropriate external 250 Ω I/V resistor in the termination arrangement. The resistor network is therefore part of the functional interface.
3. One 16-point termination panel covers only half the module.
The 3723X has 32 input points. Tricon CX documentation lists 16-point termination options such as 9761X-210RF and 9771X-210RF, meaning two panels are required when those 16-point arrangements are used for a complete 32-point module.
4. Verify the HART communication path separately from the analog signal path.
A loop can produce a correct analog measurement while HART communication is unavailable because of field wiring, termination, device configuration, or interface faults. Test both functions independently during commissioning.
Module 6: Quality Assurance SOP
- OEM anti-counterfeit visual inspection — inspect TRICONEX identification, 3723X model marking, yellow identification stripe, connectors, housing, indicators, PCB labels, and visible manufacturing information.
- Exact part-number verification — confirm 3723X character-for-character against the purchase order and physical module label.
- Platform verification — confirm the intended installation uses a Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis, since the documented 3723X installation is restricted to this chassis family.
- Termination verification — identify the installed termination arrangement and confirm compatibility with the selected 3723X interface. Document whether the installation uses 16-point or 32-point termination hardware.
- Mechanical inspection — inspect the backplane connector, termination interface, mounting hardware, housing, PCB surfaces, and connector contacts for corrosion, contamination, bent contacts, cracks, or impact damage.
- Power-on self-test (POST) — energize the module in an approved Tricon CX test chassis and record PASS, FAULT, ACTIVE, and FIELD indications, current behavior, and abnormal temperature rise.
- 32-channel analog simulation — apply calibrated input signals to representative channels across the confirmed measurement range. Record applied value, measured value, channel number, and diagnostic state.
- Full-channel verification — where the laboratory fixture permits, test all 32 input points independently. Record channel-by-channel performance rather than extrapolating from a sample.
- Resolution and accuracy verification — evaluate representative channels against the documented 16-bit resolution and <1% FSR accuracy from −20 to +60°C.
- Input-update verification — confirm the documented 50 ms input update rate, including the 47.5 ms input filtering and 2.5 ms sampling/update component, using the approved test instrumentation.
- Current-loop verification — where the installation uses 4–20 mA field transmitters, verify the external 250 Ω I/V resistor arrangement and confirm correct conversion into the module’s 0–5 VDC measurement range.
- HART communication handshake verification — connect representative HART-enabled field devices and verify HART v7 communication, device identification, pass-through data, and stable communication for the affected channel. The documented 3723X architecture provides 32 HART modems, one per point.
- HART-to-analog correlation test — confirm that the transmitted analog process value corresponds with the HART device’s reported process measurement and that abnormal device conditions are not silently masked by a valid analog current.
- Isolation verification — where required by the approved test procedure, verify field-to-system-ground isolation against the documented 400 Vrms continuous / 1500 VDC for 60 seconds limits.
- TMR verification — integrate the tested module with compatible Tricon CX processor and I/O hardware and verify triplicated analog acquisition, diagnostic reporting, and stable channel data exchange.
- Termination-path verification — perform point-to-point continuity checks through the selected termination panel and cable arrangement. Confirm channel 1–16 and 17–32 mapping before release.
- Final QC and packaging — record module number, hardware revision, termination configuration, 32-channel test results, HART communication results, diagnostic status, photographs, ESD protection, and packaging condition.
