Module 3: Technical Product Introduction

A distributed I/O station can remain electrically healthy while the host controller loses access to every connected field module when the bus interface fails. GE IC670PBI001 is the Field Control PROFIBUS DP Bus Interface Unit (BIU) responsible for connecting a local group of Field Control I/O modules to a PROFIBUS master. GE Fanuc documentation describes the BIU as the central element of a Field Control station, providing intelligent processing, I/O scanning, feature configuration, and diagnostic reporting. A single PBI001 station can support up to eight I/O modules.

The communication layer is based on PROFIBUS DP, with documented transfer rates from 9.6 kbit/s through 12 Mbit/s. The BIU operates from a 24 VDC supply, with published commercial specifications giving an 18–30 VDC operating range, approximately 7.7 W input power, and 4.45 W power dissipation. The unit provides one 9-pin D-sub PROFIBUS network connector and a second 9-pin D-sub interface for the GE Hand-Held Programmer. Station addressing is set through onboard DIP switches, while the BIU performs I/O and diagnostic-data exchange with the PROFIBUS master.

Module 4: Application Scenarios & Field Realities

  • Inside a GE Field Control remote station, IC670PBI001 acts as the communications and processing center for the local I/O group. The connected modules perform the actual discrete and analog signal acquisition or output, while the PBI001 scans them and transfers their data to the PROFIBUS master.
  • Where a PLC or DCS uses PROFIBUS DP as its remote-I/O network, the PBI001 provides the station-side interface. The documented data-rate range reaches 12 Mbaud, but the actual rate must match the PROFIBUS master configuration, cable installation, and network design.
  • During commissioning of a legacy Field Control station, the Hand-Held Programmer interface is useful for station setup and diagnostics. GE’s manual specifically documents autoconfiguration, diagnostic functions, and Hand-Held Programmer procedures for the PBI001.
  • For a brownfield replacement, preserve the physical order of the I/O modules. GE documentation states that the PROFIBUS BIU configuration must not contain empty slots between installed modules. Changing the module sequence can therefore create a station-configuration problem even when every individual I/O card is healthy.

Module 5: Migration, Compatibility & Installation Traps

Replacement Matrix

Exact IC670PBI001 with matching Field Control station: Drop-in Replacement
When the replacement has the same catalog number, compatible revision, BIU terminal block, PROFIBUS configuration, module order, and Field Control I/O population, it can normally be exchanged without changing the application logic.

IC670PBI001 revision change: Software Compatible / Firmware and GSD Verification Required
The PBI001 exists in multiple hardware/firmware revisions. GE’s product-update documentation identifies, for example, revision -BE with CORE Version 2.10, COMM Version 3.30, and GSD Version 3.1, and states that the associated GSD file must be upgraded when that communication revision is used, except for specified Horner master products.

IC670GBI001 substituted for IC670PBI001: Hardware Modification Required
The GBI001 is the Genius BIU, while PBI001 is the PROFIBUS DP BIU. They serve different network architectures and are not direct communications equivalents. GE’s Field Control product guide lists them as separate BIU families.

FIP or InterBus-S BIU substituted for : Hardware Modification Required
These BIUs use different fieldbus technologies and host-network configurations. A common Field Control mechanical architecture does not establish network compatibility.

⚠️ Field Traps (Watch Out)

GSD-file mismatch: A firmware/communications revision can require a corresponding GSD file. GE’s product update notice for -BE specifically identifies GSD Version 3.1 and states that previous GSD versions should be discarded when that communication revision is installed.

Module-order trap: The Field Control PROFIBUS station should not contain empty positions between installed I/O modules. Preserve the original station sequence during replacement and autoconfiguration.

PROFIBUS addressing trap: Station address is configured through the BIU’s onboard DIP-switch arrangement. Record the original address before removing a failed unit; a replacement with an incorrect address can power up normally while remaining invisible to the master.

Terminal-block trap: mounts to a dedicated BIU terminal block. The interface unit should therefore be replaced together with a compatible terminal assembly when the existing terminal block is damaged or from an incompatible revision.

12 Mbaud does not mean every installation should run at 12 Mbaud: Cable length, topology, termination, electromagnetic environment, and master configuration all affect the usable PROFIBUS rate. Match the replacement station to the existing network parameters rather than automatically selecting the highest documented baud rate.

Module 6: Quality Assurance SOP

Pre-Shipment QA Protocol for GE

  • Step 1 — Identity Verification: Confirm GE Fanuc marking, catalog number, complete suffix/revision, serial or manufacturing information, and associated BIU terminal-block identification.
  • Step 2 — OEM Anti-Counterfeit Visual Inspection: Inspect the GE label, barcode, PCB markings, connector bodies, DIP-switch assembly, LEDs, housing, terminal interface, and evidence of unauthorized modification.
  • Step 3 — Mechanical Inspection: Check the aluminum housing, terminal-block interface, PROFIBUS D-sub connector, Hand-Held Programmer connector, mounting hardware, and connector contacts for cracks, corrosion, contamination, or deformation.
  • Step 4 — Firmware and GSD Verification: Record the installed CORE and COMM firmware versions where available and identify the corresponding approved PROFIBUS GSD file. Do not release a replacement revision without confirming master-side compatibility.
  • Step 5 — Power-On Self-Test: Install the BIU on a compatible Field Control terminal block and apply controlled 24 VDC power. Verify PWR/RUN/OK status indications and confirm there are no station-level diagnostic errors.
  • Step 6 — Station Autoconfiguration Test: Connect a representative Field Control I/O station and verify that the BIU correctly detects and configures the installed module population using the approved GE procedure.
  • Step 7 — PROFIBUS Handshake Verification: Connect an approved PROFIBUS master and verify network initialization, station recognition, cyclic I/O exchange, and diagnostic reporting.
  • Step 8 — Address Verification: Confirm the DIP-switch address corresponds to the original station configuration and verify that the master recognizes the intended station address without duplicate-node conditions.
  • Step 9 — I/O and Diagnostic Test: Exercise representative digital and analog I/O modules in the station and verify that the correctly transmits I/O and diagnostic data to the PROFIBUS master.
  • Step 10 — Final QC Record: Record complete catalog number, hardware/firmware revision, GSD version, station address, module order, measured supply voltage, PROFIBUS communication result, autoconfiguration result, visual condition, test date, and final QC disposition.

Technical Verification Note: GE Fanuc’s GFK-1291A Profibus Bus Interface Unit User’s Manual identifies as the Field Control PROFIBUS BIU and documents its intelligent processing, I/O scanning, autoconfiguration, diagnostics, Hand-Held Programmer interface, and PROFIBUS communications functions. Current technical references identify support for up to eight Field Control I/O modules, 24 VDC power, and PROFIBUS data rates up to 12 Mbaud.

Revision Control Note: exists in multiple revisions, including -BD, -BE, -BF, -CG, -DG, and -EG. The -BE product update specifies CORE 2.10, COMM 3.30, and GSD 3.1, with a documented GSD compatibility requirement. Record the exact suffix from the physical nameplate when stocking or replacing this BIU.
